Before

Simplicity is survival

Somewhere in the chain, a container disappears from view. The tracking software is too complex, the hardware too costly, and the answers never come fast enough—leaving the logistician without the right tool for the job.

Before

After

Shipment Manager’s redesign focused on the successful aspects of Overhaul’s other map-based approach (Sentinel). We knew that we had to build a product that allowed the company to onboard clients at a faster rate. It would be ETA focused, include order and inventory information, and more clearly display status of each location and segment.

Understanding

Despite an existing product, it didn’t have enough users to create any usable data. We decided to halt any production, interview industry experts and pitch an iterative approach with outside user testing to the organization. We created a consistent means of intaking goals and frustrations and synthesized those results into larger themes.

Define

Solution design

We pushed the feedback from our initial research into larger themes so that no one internal stakeholder outweighed the other. This enabled us to create a better platform for prioritization that could more easily include leadership.

Not just prototyping smaller components or actions, full-scale prototypes became vital for internal feedback and external presentations.

Previously, designers were limited to discussions with internal experts, account managers, and customer support teams. As a product team we decided to increase our tempo, packing sprints to meet the business’ needs while creating vast prototypes with narratives we needed to test key pieces of functionality in a consistent manner.

“We use BOL (#), but everyone is different and call them different things. It makes searching for a shipment complicated.”
“We trust Overhaul, but we can’t trust freight forwarders to give you the information we need.”
“There are so many statuses, I’m not sure which one I’m supposed to look at.”

Were trying to find shipments with the best chance of getting back on track with the least amount of effort.

Front-end solutions

Monitoring commercial shipments and cargo is often overwhelming, even for professionals when they need to communicate with one another and partners. The front-end solution prioritized the ability to share specific details and ensure they would be validated and understood by everyone involved.

Canonical Layout

The new interface would rely on a canonical layout that would drastically improve the responsive nature of a map-based application on mobile, desktop, and folding screens.

Alert levels

A new color system that originally worked for security alert levels (high, medium, and low) would now work with ETA status (early, late, on time, at-risk).

Cohesive Map

In its initial version, a map was dedicated to each shipment. Now, users could view all shipments with a similar status in a specified region.

Shipment List

Shipment cards, each representing a single shipment, display multiple tracking numbers to enhance search functionality. Users now clearly understand status, ETA, number of segments, and the mode in combination with any active filter tags.

Shipent Details

An entire page of details pushed clearly and functionally into a panel allows the user to validate each piece of information with the map to the right. It also enabled us to move forward with a mobile approach.

Filtering

The filter panel aligns with all map-based applications and recently created dashboards. The majority of its functionality also aligns, but exceptions are made to work within Shipment Manager. Each filter’s format is molded around content to create a dynamic space that keeps complicated functionality from feeling too overwhelming.

Order Tracking

An entirely new feature to Overhaul, orders most often span across multiple shipments making it difficult for teams to properly track. Shipment Manager’s order tracking feature enables these teams to organize these shipments and track individual SKU numbers associated with each product.

Outcome

Shipment Manager contributed to Overhaul’s significant progress toward its target mass market audience and has been consistently onboarding clients as a result. The company's sales and customer support teams have received positive feedback from key partners. Overhaul's Shipment Manager has earned the company recognition from G2 in a new up-and-coming category, and Gartner has moved the company forward in the challenger quadrant.
